Hustling Like a Hooker – Days 1-5

Hustling Like a Hooker – Days 1-5

This follows on from my previous post about being in a tough place as some work fell through the floor on me.

So what to do – how could I make some money.  Well in the last 5-6 days I have done pretty OK in rustling up some new business.  It wasn’t pretty but here is what I did -.  There are no flash gimmicks here it was lots of email and out reach and still a way to go on getting back to pre-crash.

Apps Do Help

First I knew I need to hit the email hard.  Mailchimp does rock but I need to email a lot of people and fast. During some informal outreach with John Doherty of GetCredo he mentioned QuickMail.io and how we was loving the free trial.  So I tried it out signed up and am half way through it at the moment.

IT helped with what I did below a lot

eMail OutReach

I hate those spammy emails you get selling SEO and website design but I knew I could do better and simpler,  So I searched in Ireland for every single printer that was out there.  The reason for this was a lot of printers get asked for websites and even though they are great designers they just don’t do that work.  I do a bit of work here in Cork for two printers so know the deal.

So I made a list of 200 printers got their emails and sent them an email that was very simply this.

Hi

How is it going?  Do you do website design?  If not would you be interested in working with me to help deliver websites to customers or refer me for that business.

No big deal if you don’t.

Kieran

I did it up timed it with a short follow up mail for 3 days later and hit send.  Of course the work didn’t flood in.  Here is what I did get though.

  • 2 decent response where they said they would keep me in mind.  I added them to a reminder to follow up in a month or so.
  • One local printer with whom I and a long conversation about a project and also doing some work next week (yes).

So not bad.  I will keep this action going in some other niches.  Is it spam.  Well it is only spam if I do it repeatedly to the same people and I don’t plan to.

GetCredo

As you may (hmmm or may not) I do a lot of SEO with clients at different levels.  I have been following and interacting with John Doherty on Twitter for years from back when he was in Distilled.  We have interacted on and off about goofy crap and I never thought to hit him up on anything.

His GetCredo service links SEO / Marketing people with people looking for that type of service.  I pinged him and we did a Skype last week.  We had never spoken but got on like a house on fire.  So I signed up.  It is a monthly paid service (different pricing levels).

I got a lead the following day.

I still haven’t closed it but it is very positive.  I plan to improve my GetCredo profile significantly in the coming weeks.

Hit the Old Clients

Using the same tool I emailed all my old clients who I would like to work with again.  Again I used a simple message

Hi

Hope all is well with you.  Just checking in to see if you have any project work that you need doing.  In case you didn’t know I have grown the team so have graphic design, brochure and print design  and marketing going strong theses days as well.

Hope all is well with you….

Kieran

I got responses from about 10 people ( I emailed 55 people) and 2 of them with prospective work.

Out With The High Heels

You can look away now but this is where the hooker in me came out.  I have an account on Upwork (as a contractor and a supplier) and also on PeoplePerHour.  I spent time each day working those channels looking at design and development jobs.

Upwork yielded nothing but PPH gave me a small website job in the UK and 2 small design projects for under €100.

Yay All Sorted So

Of course not.  But things are a little bit better.  Here is the plan for the next week or so.

Funnily enough I have hired a VA to monitor PPH for me as I do have project work to do and I am quite busy with it.  Its just my pipeline looks crap.  He is going to monitor PPH and Upwork using guidelines I set and ping when he sees a decent job and I will jump in check and bid if needs.

Avoiding Social Media

I haven’t done any marketing on social media (bar one Facebook  group). That is next week really and I am thinking Twitter Ads and some Facebook boosted posts.  I want to be careful there though and do it thoughtfully with a view to list building rather than actual project work.
